Devolver Digital’s Lowrie- devs don’t need a f_@#$_ing publisher

Nigel Lowrie of Devolver Digital began his GDC talk with a screenshot from the original Legend of Zelda. He claimed that it epitomized the relationship between indie developers and publishers.

The classic Nintendo game begins with a mysterious old man offering our hero Link a sword and telling him, "It's dangerous to go alone! Take this."

For Lowrie, this is an object lesson in bad advice-giving and poor decision-making.

"Link's about to embark on this grand adventure," he says. "He just takes the sword and rolls out, because he asssumes this old guy knows what he’s doing. But he quickly finds that he needed quite a few more things than a sword…

GDC looks back for 30th edition with all-star microtalks

Kicking off the Game Developers Conference 2016 in style, an all-star set of microtalks took us through the major trends the game industry has seen across 30 editions (and 29 years) of the show.

Introduced by a video featuring all-stars from GDC's history – from Pac-Man's Toru Iwatani to Cliff Bleszinski, CGDC founder Chris Crawford kicked off by showing how much things have changed from his days developing on the Mac IIX to iOS and Mac development now.

He pointed out that in constant currency terms, the computer he had to buy was 5 times as expensive as today's best dev hardware. The barrier to entry has lowered massively.

Using other data, Crawford showed how much the possible market for games has expanded -…

Now Might Be The Best Time To Earn One Of WoW's Most Coveted Mounts

This week may be the best time to ever earn one of World of Warcraft’s most sought-after mounts, Invincible, the steed of the Lich King himself.

It’s a mount so prestigious that many mount-collecting players run the 15-year-old Icecrown Citadel raid every week on multiple characters for a chance at earning the mount from the Lich King’s corpse, usually to no avail.

But thanks to the Wrath of the Lich King Timewalking event running this week in The War Within, players on Reddit are reporting what seems like a much higher-than-normal chance of earning the mount. The prize is coming not from defeating the Lich King, but from the Cache of Timewarped Treasures quest reward earned by doing the Timewalking version of another Wrath of the Lich King raid, Ulduar.<…

Dirty Bomb Review

In Dirty Bomb, ruined London streets and abandoned train stations play host to multiplayer skirmishes where teams fight to complete objectives amid a hail of white-hot gunfire. It’s a twitch shooter at its most extreme: an arena of quick kills, high energy, and tired pinky fingers mashing down the sprint key. This fire-from-the-hip shooter arms you with shotguns, sniper rifles, knives, and, fittingly enough given the ongoing motifs, a cricket bat. Unfortunately, a lack of fresh ideas keeps the game from being memorable, while some bothersome glitches and lag stifle your enjoyment.

The formula is a recognizable one. In fact, if you’re well-versed in shooters, you can spot where Dirty Bomb derives its influence. There are ingredients from Counter-Strike, Team For…
