data-mm-id=”_0jxpagruw”>Jermaine Jones has never been a man to hold back his opinions, and in a new interview with Sports Illustrated's Grant Wahl, he went off on the way U.S. Soccer is currently run. Jones often used the phrase "with all due respect" before absolutely annihilating an aspect of the U.S. Soccer system. A brief sampling is below. On Bruce Arena:”“Bruce Arena, with all due respect, is the worst coach I ever had in my whole career. The worst. And he’s like the No. 1 American coach.””More on Arena:”“With all due respect, how can you go from Bob Bradley and Jürgen Klinsmann to Bruce Arena? Like, what are you doing, guys?””On long-time U.S. national team player Tim Ream:”“Tim Ream is not a national team captain, with all due respect. He’s a nice man but not a national team captain.””And finally on the way national team players are selected:”“And with all due respect, there’s some players, they play national team now, they’re not national team players. With all due respect. This is why we struggle. But nobody says that because it will hurt MLS. Because MLS is saying, ‘Wait a minute, if he helps them out and he brings a guy in who’s an MLS player, after a couple times playing national team he’s not a national team player. Now we can sell it better, you know? And it’s just marketing and the business.””Honestly, you can't legitimately argue with any of Jones' points. U.S. Soccer is so far behind the rest of the world and it isn't for a lack of raw talent. The development and coaching just lags miles behind the elite soccer powers. He lobbed one last shot at Arena and the way U.S. Soccer tends to promote from within and boost the profiles of people within the "family, "rather than finding the best talent in the world:”“Everything we are doing here is run like a family business. It’s like: Who do I know and who can help me out? Bruce Arena’s son [Kenny]? Come on, he’s not a coach. But then straight away he’s a national team assistant coach. Gets kicked out, and then he gets to LAFC because his dad has a friend, Bob Bradley. He has another job, and you’re like, goddamn, how is that possible?””Again, he's not wrong. The entire article is brilliant, as Wahl takes a long look at Jones' fascinating career, his personal life and looks ahead to what's next for the 38-year-old. Jones is attempting to get into coaching but has found many doors closed to him despite his outstanding playing career.

Manchester United are interested in signing Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna in the January transfer window, according to . The report has claimed that Zirkzee has a release clause of €40 million in his contract at Bologna, and that Premier League giants United could trigger it.
The report has noted two potential problems that United face in their quest to sign Zirkzee. Firstly, there are Financial Fair Play (FPF) issues that could stop the Red Devils from investing in Zirkzee in the January transfer window. Secondly, Zirkzee s previous club, Bayern Munich, have a 50% sell-on clause and could decide to sign the 22-year-old in the January transfer window for €20 million and then sell him for a profit.
Zirkzee has been on the books of Bologna since 2022 and is one of the b…
Chelsea are reportedly closing in on a loan deal for Atletico Madrid club-record signing Joao Felix in January.
Felix, 23, was signed in 2019 for €126million after winning the European Golden Boy award with Benfica, shattering Atletico s previous transfer record of Thomas Lemar by over €50m.
However, despite netting 33 goals for his new club, Felix has struggled to consistently earn a spot in their starting XI, with seven of his 12 LaLiga appearances this season coming as a substitute.
Having made such a substantial investment, Atletico are not willing to sell him at a massive loss just yet, and while they have made him available for transfer, a loan move to rehabilitate his value appears far more likely.

For 15 minutes or so the farmers were making hay at Estadio Jose Alvalade, granted plenty of open field to harvest by their well-heeled opponents.
As they did in their stunning 3-1 quarter-final victory over Manchester City, Lyon made a mockery of the derisory labels attached to Ligue 1 as they repeatedly scooted past Bayern Munich s high wire high line.
Pep Guardiola s uncharacteristic caution against Lyon has been rightly castigated, but how that game might have looked had City just gone for it was illustrated by an uncomfortable opening for Hansi Flick s in-form Bundesliga champions.
For all the enviable attacking gifts of Bayern s wide defenders Joshua Kimmich and Alphonso Davies, it was Lyon s more unheralded wing-backs Leo Dubois and Maxwel Cornet roving in…
The huge spending of the Saudi Pro League has served as an extra motivation for players plying their trade in the Gulf state, says Fabio Martins.
Four Saudi clubs – Al Ittihad, Al Nassr, Al Hilal and Al Ahli – made huge moves over the course of the transfer window.
Karim Benzema, Neymar, N Golo Kante, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino, Fabinho, Marcelo Brozovic, Riyad Mahrez, Franck Kessie and Ruben Neves were among the big names to join Cristiano Ronaldo in Saudi Arabia.
Speaking at the Thinking Football Summit, Martins, a Portuguese winger who first played in Saudi Arabia in 2020 and now plays for Al Khaleej, believes the eyes of the world are now on the Saudi Pro League, and that is only an extra motivation for players who are able to go up against superstar nam…
Fabinho believes Liverpool are well-placed to benefit from the World Cup break as Jurgen Klopp s team look to chase down their Premier League rivals.
Having fallen narrowly short of winning a second title of the Premier League era when amassing 92 points last season, Liverpool now sit sixth in the top flight, seven points adrift of a top-four place.
Jurgen Klopp s side did improve before the Premier League paused in November, and they could win three consecutive games for the first time this season when they visit Aston Villa on Boxing Day.
With France s Ibrahima Konate the only Liverpool player to remain involved beyond the quarter-finals at the World Cup, Fabinho believes the break has benefited the Reds.
It can be good, he told the club s website. I h…

Marseille kicked off their 2020-21 Champions League campaign on a disappointing note. Andre Villas-Boas’s side suffered a 1-0 defeat to Olympiakos away from home in Greece last week. Ahmed Hassan’s goal in the first minute of injury time proved to be the difference between the two sides. The French club bounced back from that loss with a narrow 1-0 victory over Lorient away from home in Ligue 1 at the weekend.

Domenico Tedesco has been named the new Belgium head coach after Roberto Martinez left his role following the Red Devils shock group-stage exit in Qatar.

Antonio Conte departed Inter after guiding the club to their first Scudetto in more than a decade, with Simone Inzaghi being plucked from Lazio, who in turn turned to Maurizio Sarri.
Sarri s former club Juventus decided to end the Andrea Pirlo experiment after just a year and opted for a familiar face in six-time title winner Massimiliano Allegri as his replacement.
Luciano Spalletti is back in Serie A with Napoli, meanwhile, and Jose Mourinho has returned to Italy with Roma some 11 years on from his hugely successful stint with Inter.

Liverpool have emerged at the top of the Premier League table, if only temporarily, after beating Burnley at Turf Moor on Tuesday evening. Darwin Nunez broke the deadlock after less than six minutes with a fine strike, and a deft finish from Diogo Jota in in the final minute set the final score, marking the 50th goal of the Portuguese forward for the club in all competitions.
The game
Liverpool certainly deserved their victory, though the outcome could ve gone either way. Jurgen Klopp s team stamped their authority over the proceedings from the start and throughout the first half, continuously attacking, without Burnley showing any capability of hitting back. In fact, the home side didn t even shoot on goal before the break, while goalkeeper James Trafford faced a total of 14 …
